Summer List

I’m not a big one for life lists. Some people swear by them, but mostly they just make me anxious.

However, every summer seems to come and go at a faster clip. Last summer a good portion of it was taken over by our wedding, but this summer is mostly wide open. Travis will be traveling a lot for work, since as a photographer who shoots mostly weddings this is his busy season. So in the spirit of not wasting this summer and wanting to keep myself busy, I’m trying out a summer list.

I figure if it ends up being a bit of a failure, well then it’ll only be one summer’s list, and I can forget about it once the trees begin to turn.

So here goes:

1. Watch some fireworks
2. Celebrate our first wedding anniversary
3. Go to Winnipeg
4. See the Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant in De Smet, South Dakota (going with my mom)
5. Swim in a body of water (that isn’t a pool)
6. Create a wedding album with my husband
7. Get a bike
8. Read 2 books per month
9. Sit on my balcony more often
10. Drink the bottle of wine I brought back from South Africa more than 2 years ago
11. Go to RedHawks minor league baseball games

Turns out, I can already cross one off that list! On Wednesday when I came home from work, this beautiful bike was sitting spotlighted in our entry. My husband surprised me! It’s a beauty.

So a little test ride was in order, naturally.

I guess I should replace ‘get a bike’ with ‘get a helmet’ on the list.

So do you have a summer list? What is on yours?

  1. Trisha says:

It’s a lovely bike! I think I’m going to be spending a lot of time on mine this summer.

  2. Katie* says:

Very cool! I also have a list. Go to Bismarck, and Make a Dress.

  3. Britta says:

Great list! As mentioned before, my hotel recommendation in Winnipeg:

You also MUST visit Saint Boniface and eat some poutine!

  4. Yay!! You look fab on that bike! And I enjoy list making – though I’ve done away with the life list. The summer list sounds fabulous, and also very doable (a big perk when it comes to list making).

    My own little list:
    – frame some wedding photos
    – frame the rest of our art that we have rolled up lying about
    – have a pool party

    Ta da! <3

  5. Beth says:

The best thing about summer lists is that they force us to live life *today* because summer is so damn short. I’m already not sure how I’m going to finish the things on mine!

  6. Liz says:

Hmmm…I haven’t thought much about this summer. Mostly my thoughts thus far are myopically focused on how to combine biking + wine as often as possible. Summer doesn’t really start here until after July 4th so I’ve got a few weeks to figure it out.

    Some ides:
    -Pool party (go Lauren!)
-Bastille Day picnic (it’s a Saturday!)
    -Day hikes
    -Monthly sail with my dad

  7. Maggie says:

We did a summer list last year. It was great fun and didn’t make me feel pressured (I don’t usually like arbitrary lists with deadlines).

Snazzy bike! One of the things on our list this year was “buy helmets, even if they make us look dorky.” Just crossed that off last weekend.

    Other things:
-spend some time in our hammock
-join the pool and go [bike there] at least 27 times before Labor Day
-find sunscreen that doesn’t have REALLY bad chemicals and isn’t crazy expensive (I will accept questionable chemicals, because there seems to be no other option)
-go to dermatologist for yearly skin cancer screening
    -watch fireworks
    -grill some brats
    -make homemade lemonade
    -celebrate our anniversary
-light sparklers on the 4th of July (I’ve never done this before)
    -go on a few picnics
    -play Frisbee golf
    -buy a floppy sunhat (done!)

  8. Jo says:

    I *love* your summer list!!

And your bike pictures are perfect for this post. You’re gorgeous! :)

Mine always has to do with some summer cocktail; this summer it’s ginger-infused-vodka cocktails and Long Island Iced Teas. I also have reading and tanning and a real, no–phone vacation.

  9. miss alix says:

yay bikes! i always fail at my summer lists. such nice ideas, and yet i just don’t mark them off. i think every year i list “go to a drive in movie” and never do. maybe this year!

  10. Erin says:

You inspired me to think about a list, which I hadn’t concocted yet! Here’s mine:

    – Bike to the beach often
    – Make a lot of gelato/ice cream/sorbet
    – Eat lots of tomatoes from my garden
    – Go camping three times (at least)
    – Watch the sun rise on the Summer Solstice
    – Survive 4 weeks of jury duty (grumble grumble)
    – Win at least ONE softball game during the summer league series

    Hooray for summer!!!!!

  11. Terri says:

Congrats on the new bike! The skirt is the perfect one for cycling. I am near to retirement and keep thinking that I need to make a loooong list of things I still want to experience.

PS: on my summer list? Visit you.

And also, drink lots of Michigan beer when I’m back.
