Oscar’s Red Carpet

The cold I was fighting off at the end of last week hit me hard this weekend, and it was confirmed that I have strep throat. So my lovely weekend plans with my parents were scrapped, and we spent most of it at home.

But I did stay up and watch the Oscars last night, because that kind of thing is up my alley. Unfortunately, I thought the red carpet was a bit dull this year. Nothing stood out as particularly stunning, but there were a few I enjoyed.

Lupita Nyong’o looked light and youthful in her pretty Prada gown. I thought Sandra Bullock was alluring in a very figure-flattering McQueen. I liked the way Cate Blanchett’s Giorgio Armani gown glittered as she moved. And Emma Watson looked smashing in her understated Vera Wang.

Who were your favorites last night? I’m curious if you also thought things were pretty tame, and if there was anything good I missed. There sure are a lot of celebrities, so I’m sure I didn’t see everything.

Update: Also, I would be remiss not to point out the great Burberry suit Kevin Spacey wore last night. I love the black peaked lapel contrasting the navy blue of his suit. This was a great look for him.

-I like Ellen but she seemed so bland and boring last night.
-Kim Novak’s face was horrible. I think she was 81 trying to be 41 and it was NOT working. What happened to aging gracefully? See Sally Field for that.
-I really like Lupita and think she is so beautiful and classy but I wasn’t feeling that dress and headband last night. A dress cut that low needs a little more boobs than she’s got (see Pink’s red dress which was amazing). Too much boob and those dresses look trashy but not enough (as in Lupita’s case) just made her look like a boy playing dress up. Her speech was wonderful and loved her comment about paying tribute to Patsy.
-Amy Adams could wear a potato sack and look good. When she walked onstage with Bill Murray she had that little Marilyn Monroe wiggle. Goodness. That navy dress and Tiffany coral and navy earrings were simple and stunning.
-So happy that 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture. Although I have only seen 4 of the ones nominated it was a movie that astounded me with feeling and depth and emotion like I’ve never felt in movie. I cried from the beauty of it and emotional heartbreak.
-Best Actor: Matthew. I’ve only seen 2 of the 5 nominated (Christian and Chiewetel) and it would be a hard decision for me between those 2. Can’t wait to see Matthew’s performance.
-Best Actress: Cate. I had only seen her and Amy Adams’ performance and they were both very good. I didn’t like Cate’s movie but she acted well.
-Great Gatsby: So happy it won 2 awards for costume and production set but not sure how! Wasn’t that in the previous year Oscar timeline? Those costumes were gorgeous.
-Best Short Subject Documentary: “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” Have you seen this? Watch it. http://nickreedent.com/
-Best Dressed: Amy Adams (who knew Navy could be so hot), Idina Menzel’s dark green dress, Kate Hudson, Kevin Spacey and that navy tux – wow, Charlize Theron, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence (but I could do without the hip flaps), Evan Rachel Wood (that green beaded dress just bowled me over)
-Worst Dressed: Whoopi, Bette’s performance dress, Angelina Jolie (Angie, you & Liza need to go bra shopping – fake or not the girls need a lift)
-Worst Makeup: Viola Davis – I loved her hair but something about the makeup made her look so old and matronly
    -Best Hair: Zooey Deschanel
-Best use of Goatee:- Harrison Ford
-Best use of sheer hunkiness: Channing Tatum
-Worst Use of hair brush: Bill Murray

We are a somewhat divided house, Miss J.

Sandy killed it in the navy. I would wear that dress to the grocery store I love it so much.

I really liked Lupita because I’m human but I wish it were styled differently. I would swap the headband for a necklace but I’m sure she will launch 1,001 headband trend posts so +1 for that.

Polite claps to Cate and Emma. Nothing groundbreaking here. Cate gets extra points for amazing hair. Emma gets demerits for the rat’s nest situation she’s got going on. (But perhaps makes up for it with lipstick perfection and her delightful rapport with Joseph Gordon Handsome?)

My favorites: Kate Hudson, Amy Adams, Gaga (only because she surprised me by being tame and event appropriate) and Keri Washington for wearing drool worthy stilettos while one million weeks pregnant.

I will have to look up Gaga because she’s another I haven’t seen pictures of. She was tame? Surprising!

Also, I wish Keri Washington had worn something a little more figure hugging, because the giant tent of purple just wasn’t working for me. I didn’t even notice she had on stilettos because all that purple did nothing to move the eye around.

One that I particularly liked that hasn’t been mentioned was Glenn Close. I love a bolero and the entire ensemble looked gorgeous on her.
